This series starts of with Horus Rising, and aims to lay down some of the assumed backstory behind the current Warhammer 40K universe. There have since been a few short stories featuring Eisenhorn, as well as his pupil Ravenor, so you won't be short on stories to read. It covers all three orders of the inquisition (Xenos, Malleus, and Hereticus) as well as a few aliens (including Eldar), psychic powers, corruption and Space Marines. This is a three book omnibus detailing different aspects of the Imperial Inquisition, who are like the 'Space Police' of the setting, and it really gives a flavour of the Grim Dark setting as whole. If you have any other questions just ask. Both Eisenhorn and The Horus Heresy books are aimed at introducing you to WH40K in some way. But there is some great storytelling and a lot of good authors in the 40k verse.

I felt overwhelmed when I first got into it a few years ago. Hope that helps, I know it's a lot to take in. I just finished Deathfire which focuses on the Salamanders journey to return Vulkan to Nocturne during Guilliman's founding of the Imperium Secondus (since he thinks Earth, or 'Terra' as they call it in 40k, has been destroyed). Mostly because I didn't want to read it all and not every Legion is telling a story I care about so I stick to Legions I like (Salamanders, Blood Angels, Ultramarines.unfortunately nothing where the Space Wolves are major players yet). There's about 31ish books in the HH series right now.I've read about 12.

Start with the first three and take your time through the others. Some jump ahead, others take place concurrent to other events.but that's understandable as you now have a galaxy wide civil war as well as some alien incursions. So release order isn't exactly chronological order. These novels (after the first 3) sort of play fast and loose with the timeline. Unremembered Empire is also pretty important, but not required in my opinion. Those leave off right before the Dropsite Massacre of Isstvan V.

Now when reading the HH novels the only REQUIRED ones (and this is just my opinion) are the first three: Hours Rising, False Gods, and Galaxy in Flames.

The HH novels take place in the 30th millenia (30k if you will) so 10,000 years before the 40k novels. The first book in the HH (Hours Rising) does the important back story work like who the Emperor is, what the Primarchs and Space Marines are, what the Great Crusade is and why it's happening. There's history to the 40k verse prior to the Hours Heresy, but the Heresy is the big catalyst point for everything going on in 40k.
